My first attempt at tattooing professionally was a complete and total failure.

I Started My First Full-Time Job as a Tattoo Artist… And I Failed
I didn’t fail because I didn’t do everything right…
No – I did everything right except I was missing one major piece of the puzzle.
And that one piece was actually getting clients.
You see, when I first got into tattooing, I ended up in not one – but two – apprenticeships where I was learning bad technique in shops that weren’t safe…
I ended up moving and getting a third apprenticeship where I had to spend months fixing my technique and eventually I became a full-time artist at that shop.
At work my job was to basically do everything a professional tattoo artist did…for apprenticeship pay.
When I asked my mentor when I’d get put on the same split as the rest of the professional artists, he said that I wouldn’t.
It was then that I realized he would never see me as anything more than an apprentice.
That’s Right - I Went Through 3 Apprenticeships…And Ended Up Not Even Making Enough to Scrape By
I guess life didn’t really pan out like it was supposed to.
During that time I thought about opening my own studio.
But…knowing it’d take thousands of dollars, it was way out of my budget.
For a long time…
I decided NOT to do it.
Because, at the time $4,000 – $5,000 was A LOT of money for me.
So for months…I’d go to work, get half of my money taken by my mentor…
Living the “starving artist” lifestyle…
Often dealing with rude clients that got pushed onto me by artists who’d been at the studio longer than me.
I spent so much time thinking about my life and the “what if” question..
What if I kept my current job and it doesn’t pan out?
What if I continue at this shop, and continue on the same path that I’m on..?
What if it gets so bad that my art can’t support me anymore?
I’m sure you can relate…
I was feeling frustrated, unhappy, wanting more out of life..
And the one thought that kept going over and over in my head was what if I continue doing what I was doing – then I’d continue to get the same results and probably end up where I am for the rest of my life…
…and the idea of that being my life crushed me.
I could not imagine living a life of barely making it – that idea drove me crazy
I wanted more out of life.
And that’s when I realized that I can always make that $4,000 – $5,000 it’d take to open a shop back…
After all, you can always make more money… but can’t live your life twice.
So I Decided I Was Going To Take the Leap and Open A Tattoo Studio With a Friend and Business Partner…
Now here’s where it gets interesting for me...
We found a space, fixed it up, and opened the doors – I was stoked!
I knew this was going to be a defining moment of my life..
It was the time where I decided to take full responsibility of my future, and not leave it up to chance anymore.
As you probably already know – I started having to learn how to run a tattoo business.
And it’s not the kind of business I run now.
It was a traditional old-school shop.
The kind where you had to pay for ads.
The kind where you work every waking hour to keep the shop afloat.
The kind where you do everything yourself with no help.
Some would call that “hardworking”…But I was overworked.
But then things went south with my business partner.
I had this romantic idea of opening up a small shop, with people constantly calling the shop to book in and get tattoos that I wanted to do.
Several months in…and it still didn’t feel like we had things “figured out” yet.
Me and my business partner were so stressed…
We had different visions for what we wanted the studio to be…
And a few days after we had a real falling out…
I walked out of that studio for the last time, thinking I’d lost not just my savings but years of my life.
I couldn’t just go around town and ask for a job in a studio. I’d become their competition – even if it was just for a few months…
Those bridges had been burned.
Yep…I was THAT guy.
Luckily, I had a wife that backed me up and told me to try one more time.
And that’s when I opened a studio on my own.

And even though I had my first clients – I struggled.
