How Austin Went from ZERO Tattooing Experience to Making $6,000/Month in Just 12 Weeks

Without a traditional offline apprenticeship - here's how he did it
But first - hey.

I’m Brandon.

I’ve been tattooing for over ten years, and I own my own tattoo studio here in Tennessee.

You might know me from my tattoo tutorials on YouTube, but what you might not know is that I lead Tattooing 101’s private coaching program, where I personally mentor a small group of up-and-coming tattoo artists looking to build their skills – and their businesses – fast.

And that’s where I met Austin.

Before Tattooing 101, Austin was Already Deep into the Art World...

Working for himself as a freelance artist and muralist.

But it was a feast-and-famine lifestyle...

And he wanted to escape it to pursue his dream of becoming a tattoo artist.

Every time he talked to pro tattoo artists about getting started, they all told him he needed to start with a traditional apprenticeship.

That meant giving up his regular income, which he couldn’t afford to do. With bills to pay and people depending on him, he was stuck, trying to figure out how to make his tattoo dream happen.

Learning online and moving at his own pace caught his eye. It was just the kind of option he needed.

He Loved That Tattooing 101 Laid It All Out for Him:

From the right materials to buy to clear exercises to practice. Everything was organized and clear, making it easy for him to dive right in.

That’s when he decided to take things to the next level and begin private coaching.

And Within a Few Months, He Opened His Own Studio Making $6,000/Month with Aspiring Artists Coming to His Studio, Asking Him for Apprenticeships.

Here’s exactly what he did…

Austin’s 12-Week Roadmap

Over the course of 12 weeks, Austin followed a detailed plan that would build his design skills, his tattooing skills, and his dedicated fanbase using simple but effective marketing techniques.

Phase 1

Drawing Calendar

Austin first followed a drawing calendar with references me and Nathan handpicked for students to master the most popular elements in tattooing.

Each day, he would draw five to six tattoo designs, with each day focusing on one element. For example, five roses, five snakes, or five eagles.

Phase 2

Tattooing Calendar

In addition to the drawing calendar, Austin also followed a tattooing calendar. For the first several weeks, this meant knocking out the fundamentals by completing daily tattooing drills we provided to him.

He practiced tattooing lines, curves, and basic shapes, as well as packing and different shading techniques on fake skin.

We also provided a list of all the materials he would need in order to get started so he could know he was getting high-quality equipment that would support his work.

Phase 3

Marketing as a Tattoo Artist

We didn’t want to stop at simply helping grow his drawing and tattooing skills. We wanted to make sure that he was ready to operate as a business the moment he was ready to start taking on clients. That is why our private coaching program includes a large focus on building a community around yourself as a tattoo artist.

Austin learned how to use Instagram to create his own private online community where he could connect with potential customers, answer their questions, and show off his work.

This completely eliminated the guessing game of posting to Instagram and hoping the algorithm would push his art to the right people. Instead, the control was put back in his hands while allowing him to build personal connections with people in his area.

By building this relationship with his audience through the posting schedule and sample posts we provided inside the program, he found a dedicated following.

These are the people who now immediately think of him when they decide to get tattooed – and who in turn invited their own friends to the group to connect them with Austin.

With his skills and audience growing quickly, we then took Austin step-by-step through the process of setting up her business. For most tattoo artists, this is the most intimidating part.

This meant:

For Each Step of the Way, We Provided Detailed Tutorials as Well as All the Links He Needed.

This took out all the online searching and confusion that normally goes into starting your own tattoo business.

Because all the guesswork was taking out of the process, Austin could focus more heavily on spending time tattooing and connecting with customers.

Throughout each of the three phases...

Austin Joined Both Group Coaching Calls with Other Students as Well as Individual Calls with Me AND Nathan.

During these calls we looked at his designs and tattoos together, and he received immediate feedback on his work and personalized advice on how to improve.

These real-time sessions made sure he developed her tattooing technique correctly from the get-go. Instead of accidentally picking up bad habits, the immediate feedback allowed him to correct his approach on the spot and sharpen his skills fast.

Beyond our live coaching calls, he was of course encouraged to message anytime he needed additional help or advice.

And his results were nothing short of amazing.

In December of 2022...

Just weeks after starting the coaching program, he did his first-ever tattoo on human skin.

And by February of 2023...

He was tattooing full-time in his own studio, in complete control of his schedule, and booked out well in advance.

At first, Austin’s goal was to make $3,000 a month tattooing.

But during his first flash tattoo event, he nearly pulled in that amount in just one weekend.

Today, Austin works 4 days a week, making $6,000 a month from tattooing alone – with no more side gigs or outside work. And now he’s come full circle, mentoring a new artist under his wing.
